One of the Yemassee Revitalization Corporation's main goals is to foster economic development in downtown Yemassee. By restoring and renovating existing structures within the town the YRC has added potential retail space while at the same time celebrating the area's history.

The YRC selected the Yemassee Train Depot as the organization's first restoration project. The depot lies in the center of downtown Yemassee and Amtrak stops at the depot 4 times a day. Prior to the YRC's restoration the depot building needed desperate safety upgrades including the removal of asbestos and lead paint and the installation of a new roof.

Although the YRC completed Phase 1 of the depot restoration in August of 2011 the project is not completed. Phase 2 of the restoraiton will include parking lot upgrades and Phase 3 will consist of completing the interior eletrical and mechanical systems.

     OTHER PROJECTS

In addition to the Yemassee Train Depot, the YRC is currently in the planning stages of a renovation of the downtown streetscape. This restructuring will provide safer and more accessible parking and a cleaner and more efficient sidewalk pattern.

The YRC also was recently awarded a USDA grant that will provide funding for the resoration of the Old Health Center building in downtown Yemassee. Structural plans have been approved by the state of South Carolina and the USDA and the YRC is currently moving forward with this project.
