Annual Sunday Service at Old Sheldon Church Ruins - May 8, 2011 - noon

Tucked away among the towering oak trees dripping with Spanish moss sit the ruins of Old Sheldon Church.  The church originally built in the 1750's was twice burnt -- first by the British during the Revolutionary War, and second after being rebuilt in 1826 by General Sherman's troops in 1865 during the Civil War.  The church was never rebuilt.  What remains today are the formidable, weathered brick pillars of its original temple-form Greek Revival architecture.  Annually on the second Sunday after Easter, a noonday prayer service is held and open to the public.  A silver communion service set and other relics of the old church dating back to the 1750's are used during the service.  Following the service is a bring-your-own-picnic lunch,  For more information call 843-522-1712.
