Here's why aging hamlet wants to become much more than a whistle stop.
YEMASSEE — An aluminum clamp light plugged into an extension cord hangs from the ceiling in front of a portable toilet. Paint curls up from wood like whitecaps on rough seas. Plywood sheets cover windows.
On Saturday, May 14, the Yemassee Revitalization Corporation (YRC) gave people the chance to taste the specialty dishes of Lowcountry chefs. Local cooks put on their aprons, fired up their grills and brought in their favorite dishes for tasting pleasures. The Inaugural Yemassee Lowcountry Cook-Off was held at the ball field next to the Dollar Store on Highway 68 in Yemassee and was an afternoon of good eats.
The Town of Yemassee is gearing up for a big fundraiser this weekend supporting an effort to spruce up the town, and give tourists more reason to stick around when they're passing through.
