Planning a Trip to Yemassee

Yemassee is easily accessible by roadway, railway or  airway.  By car, Yemassee is just under an hour north of Savannah, GA off Interstate 95, just over an hour south of Charleston, SC off of Highway 17, and 30 minutes west of Beaufort, SC off Highway 21.

The Amtrak train stops four times daily at the Yemassee Depot.  The Palmetto line offers daily service between Boston, MA and Savannah, GA.  The Silver Meteor line offers daily service between Boston, MA and Miami, FL.

Its location offers a perfect day trip to escape from the hustle and bustle of the neighboring big cities. Whether you are a history buff, a sportsman or a nature lover, a day trip to Yemassee holds something in store for you.

Start your visit with a stop by the Lowcountry Visitors Center and Museum at Exit 33 off of Interstate 95 in Yemassee.  The center is housed in the historic Frampton Plantation House, c. 1868, and offers great information about the area and its history.

Visit the Old Sheldon Church ruins, originally built between 1745 and 1757.  The church was burned once during the Revolutionary War and a second time during the Civil War.  Stoney Creek Independent Presbyterian Chapel lies in nearby McPhersonville and was originally built in 1743. The church was used as a hospital during the Civil War. Blood stains remain on the floor to this day.  It served as the setting for the wedding scene in the movie, “Forrest Gump.”

Yemassee offers wide open country roads for the cycling enthusiasts.  Take a trek through Hampton County or down River Road into Beaufort County.  Kayakers can put in their kayaks at one of the river boat landings and take a ride down the Combahee River.  Boats and kayaks can be put in at Sugar Hill Landing on River Road or the Yemassee Boat Landing on Route 21.

Yemassee is famous to many sportsmen with its river and creek fishing and hunting.  The area offers a four and a half month deer season and contains one of largest whitetail deer populations in country.  Wildlife abounds with wild turkeys, quail, doves and wild hogs.
